BeMUSEUM // 6th EDITION
OCTOBER 20th 2022
AT KBR

The overarching theme of the conference is THE MUSEUM IN TROUBLED TIMES.

As museums are confronted with different types of disruption (such as the pandemic, cancel culture, or new tech), they are increasingly urged to react, take a stance and adapt, not only in their programming, but also in their conduct and management as an institution. Moreover, these measures can have specific economic, social, and/or ethical consequences.

How do these disruptions change museum practices? What can museums do to face turmoil? Are there ways to anticipate and be proactive?

Get to know our techbreakers and fill in this quiz for a chance to win one of three prizes lovingly offered by our favorite brewery, En Stoemelings.

__OPTION 1. PANEL - RENEWING ACCESS, PARTICIPATION AND RELATIONSHIPS WITH AUDIENCES (FR/NL)
moderated by Loïc Thaler, Presenter, Radio and Podcast host

Accelerated digitalisation, large societal developments and increased financial pressure in recent years have had an impact on museums and visitors alike. Now more than ever, it is therefore important to re-establish the relationship between museums and their audiences. We will take a look at current museum practices that intend to adequately reach out and keep in touch with the audience and develop a new relationship with them, online as well as onsite, in an increasingly digital world.

__OPTION 2. WORKSHOP - STRESS RELIEF FOR YOU AND YOUR TEAM (EN)
facilitated by Laurence Bellet-Barlow

In case of disruption around us, whatever the reason, there is also always a mental impact: our brain needs to process what is happening and try to adapt to it. This takes time, energy and can be stressful. However, with the right strategy, this process can at least be made easier. This is why we would like to present a workshop on reducing stress in your team. The key question that will be addressed: what can we do concretely to cope better with difficult and stressful moments at work?

Seats are limited.

__OPTION 1. PANEL - COMMUNICATION IN THE FACE OF TURMOIL (FR/NL)
moderated by Rolf Quaghebeur, Director, Kaap

How to differentiate your communication during societal turbulence(s) and/or in relation to contested topics?
As public-facing institutions, museums are enshrined in their societal context. It seems there’s situations aplenty nowadays that they could decide to act on publicly or feel forced to react to: #metoo, Black Lives Matter, refugees, Covid measures, climate change, Russia, corporate sponsorships, the list could go on and on. We will explore multiple cases of the role of communication in relation to its wider social context of the positioning of the museum therewithin.

__OPTION 2. WORKSHOP - UNDERSTANDING NFTs AND THEIR POSSIBLE USE FOR MUSEUMS (EN)
facilitated by Giacomo Schwarz, Co-Founder, Patron of Art

The second workshop of the day will focus on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) that have been creating a buzz, but often also not less of confusion. The interactive workshop will therefore be about understanding better what NFTs actually are and what their possible use for museums could be. Giacomo Schwarz of Patron of Art will join us to give a short introduction on the subject and then let you as participants dive deeper into the topic in order to actively think about the practicality of NFTs in a museum context.

Seats are limited.
